Drum Recording

We recorded the drum tracks into a fostex 16 track at a rehearsal studio "Lyric Studios" in Garden City, NY.

Recording live drums is definitely a challenge. In the past, I've only recorded with drum machines since I had no drummer. It's opened the music up tremendously having a live drummer.

I am new to recording drums, but I read as much as I could and tried to do my best. Tom and Bill helped with the setting up too.

Thanks to Studio Forums and A-Designs, I won the A-Designs Reddi Tube DI giveaway! Very Happy
It's a great piece of gear. Since we are using the Reddi for Bass, it was recommended to use it on the snare as opposed to the kick, since the kick would be more in the same low frequency as a bass, so it wouldn't fall over each other with the same flavor. I thought the audix i5 with the Reddi on the snare worked really nice together.

So far we recorded the drum tracks for 10 songs, one of which we are scrapping because we have changed the rhythm of the song drastically. We will record the drum track for that song over with some others for our next, next album.

We recorded with a "Mapex Pro M drumset".
Zildjian cymbals
ZBT 20" ride
18" crash
14" high-hats
8" K splash cymbal
Vic Firth american jazz hickory drum sticks

Drum Microphone Setup:
Mic's were run through the Soundcraft E12 Spirit mixer, except for the snare which will be run through the REDDI box, then recorded into tracks 1-7 of Fostex VF16ex.

Kick:
Sm57 batter kick pedal:
Placement should be a an inch or two from the inside head over the pedal aiming slightly angled in and down (reverse phase from the outside head)

Audix D6 on outside kickdrum head:
Placement should be a few inches from the outside head aiming slightly angled upwards for phase reversal. Adjust distance depending on how much room sound is desired vs. direct sound coming off of the head.

Snare: Audix i5, Placement should between high-hat and tom.
About 2 inches above the head and pointing towards the center of the drum. If you want more rim, aim less towards the center, more towards the rim.

Rack Tom:
CAD M179 on top.
Put it in hypercardioid mode. Then float the mic about 2" above the head and maybe 2" inside the rim, pointed towards the center of the tom. You might have to play with placement a bit to find the sweet spot but that'll get you pretty close.

Floor Tom: ADK Hamburg on top.
Similar to floor tom, but look at diagram for the angle shown.
(diagram on page 5 of 8 of SAE college microphone placement pages)

Overheads:
Oktava Mk-012 - Left
Oktava Mk-012 - Right
Using "Recorderman" Technique: Pretty much an variation of the Glyn John technique.... Left mic over drummers forehead about 32, or 33" straight up from the center of the snare, pointing down.

Room Mic: A NADY RSM-2 through an art tube mp as a room mic.

Then right mic over drummers right shoulder pointing to the center of the snare. Needs to be the same distance from the center point of the snare as the other mic was, os 32, or 33" depending on how you place the other mic. Mic's must be equidistant to the snare, and also should be equidistant to the the spot that the beater hits the kick.

Wearing headphones, panned hard left and right, as drummer hits the kick softly, you can adjust the mics until the kick sounds like it's in the center of the image.

"Planet" recording info.

Drums:
Same as above in the first post of this thread.

Bass:
Fender Jazz bass through Reddi Tube DI.

Acoustic Guitar:
Rushing CR-3 size 5 guitar. I ran the Rushing (with fishman slimline pickup installed, which is made by fishman for Martin guitars) through radial JDI into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 (direct track). And I mic'd with Oktava MK-o12's through Sebatron ch1 and ch2. I also used a Nady RSM-2 thorugh safesound p1, placed behind me.

Electric Guitar:
I used my Alembic skylark. One track through a Barber tone press into a timmy pedal. And the other track through a fulltone fulldrive 2. I then used amp simulation plugins in amplitude.

Percussion:
I added a tambourine track using Drums on Demand's Essential acoustic percussion set.

Lead Vocal:
Nady RSM-2 into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound p1.

Backing Vocals:
(EV and Tom's backing vocals) I used a CAD M179 through Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound p1.
(When you go line in into the safesound p1, it bypasses the preamp, so I am using the compressor, limiter, and expander of the safesound.)

Keyboard:
I used a piano sound and an analog pulse sound from an E-MU xl-7 (vintage rom) through the Phoenix Audio.
I also recorded a moog rogue through the Phoenix Audio drs-1.
This is the first mix on my new PC which I bought through Front End Audio. I mixed in Sonar 4, and I used Waves plugin

"Come Ignore" recording info.

Drums:
Same as above in the first post of this thread.

Percussion:
I used a tamborine and an eggshaker with a CADm179.

Bass:
Atelier Z bass through Reddi Tube DI

Electric Guitar:
1. Alembic Skylark > fulltone fulldrive 2 > Sebatron.

2. Alembic skylark > barber tone press >timmy pedal >Sebatron.

And then I used amp simulation plugins in amplitude and tweaked them.

Acoustic Guitar:
I used the JP Rushing Traveler Guitar which has an LR Baggs element active pickup installed in it. I ran it through the Phoenix Audio DRS-1 as a direct track into Sonar.

And, I mic'd it with a Nady RS-M2 powered with the Safesound p1 into Sonar. I then added a little bit of reverb with waves spring reverb plugin.

Keyboard:
Groovebox MC-505 sounds

I ran it stereo through Sebatron vmp2000e. I then used some waves plugins for eq and reverb. I added a couple of keyboard tracks using a yamaha cs1x through A-designs reddi tube di.

EMU-xl7 - vibraphone sound direct into presonus firebox.

Lead Vocal:
I tried singing with an ADK Hamburg through the Sebatron.

I wasn't happy with it, so I used a CAD m179 through the Phoenix Audio and it was much better. Although I kept some of the ADK Hamburg through Sebatron for some of the backing vocal parts. I used wav plugins on the vocal tracks in sonar.

Tom's Vocal:
I used a Studio Projects B1 through Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound p1 for compressor and expander.

Mixed in Sonar 4, and used some wavs plugins, and amplitude on guitars.

NY Sidewalk

Drums:
So far I mixed down the 8 tracks of drums in Sonar 4 into a stereo wav.
There were 8 tracks. I pretty much just popped the tracks into the drum stem that I used for planet, then I just tweaked them. I cut the rack and floor tom tracks out, only leaving them when the tom "fills" were being played.

I cloned a snare part, one of them with compression and eq and the other straight as it went in, and blended them.

Also, I have found it to work well if the toms are tuned a bit too high, you can clone the track and then adjust the pitch to be lower and then blend it in low with the original track. It sounded better this way to me. Fuller.

Guitar:
I was experimenting with the mamabear dtar tonight. It can get a lot of different sounds.
I'm planning on recording acoustic guitar with my JP Rushing Dreadnought guitar:

I went from the guitar into the dtar, then out of the dtar 1/4" out into the phoenix audio drs-1, and out of the dtar xlr out (which is an uneffected out), into the safesound p1.
Both out into presonus firebox.

I'm experimenting with it. The amount of blend makes a big difference. Afterwards I was duplicating tracks and panning them. Need to be careful with phase. I am going to also mess around with some plugins too. Overall, I think I would probably like to still mic the guitar and blend it with the dtar direct tracks.

Even though I'm not in a great acoustically set place, it seems like the real air opens things up. There seems to be a certain enclosure kind of sound at a certain point that doesn't break through when using the effect of the dtar.

I'm going to mess around with it some more. I wish the firebox had more than 2 inputs so I could record more tracks at a time.

I'll probably just replay the guitar again with some real mic'd tracks afterwards. It's gonna take some messing around, but I'm hoping it will end up cool.

Ok, I ended up deciding to use the rickenbacker for this song.
http://corrientesmusic.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=37

I'm really happy with the results I got! Nice guitar for sure!! Very Happy

I recorded the ric through the sebatron, finally tried out the new mullards we put in. Nice results, I can't explain the difference just yet, it's the first time I tried it, but I could say that I got really a nice sound from it.

I went direct from the ric into the sebatron, daisy chained ch. 1 to ch.2 and then out of the sebatron into the Presonus firebox.

I then duplicated the track a couple of times and used some amplitude settings, tweaked, adjusted volume and panning of the duplicated tracks.

After that, I reamped the direct track out of the firebox, through Radial JDI, into Barber tone press > Barber Barb EQ > Timmy pedal > Fender Blues JR. amp.

Then I mic'd the blues jr. with an Audix i5 through Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into firebox. And, an Oktava MK-012 through the Safesound P1 into the firebox.

So far I'm happy with the drums and guitar.
Main guitar reamped through Musicman.

Alembic Skylark on ending guitar strummy, solo part.

Reamped Guitar
Main Rick guitar part and ending Alembic part were reamped out of Presonus Firebox into Radial JDI to Musicman amp.

2 mics were used on the amp.
First, an Audix i5 powered by Sebatron vmp200e ch.1 daisy chained to ch.2 then back into firebox.

And an ADK Hamburg into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 to Safesound P1 for expander, limiter, compression. Then back into Firebox.

Vocals

I used a CAD m179 through Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound p1 (compressor/limiter/expander's line in, so safesound's preamp section is bypassed). For lead vocal.

And for backing vocals, I used an adk hamburg into sebatron daisy chained ch. 1 to ch.2 into safesound, same as above.

And, I also did another backing vocal track with a Studio Projects B1 also into daisy chained sebatron > safesound.

Bass

Sadowsky MV4 bass
We ran it through the Reddi Tube DI into Soundcraft Spirit E12 into Presonus Firebox.
Some compression and eq plugins were used afterwards. I cloned the bass track and added a bass cab simulation from amplitude and mixed it in a little with the original bass track.

Drums:
Same recording info. as the first post in this thread.
I just mixed the tracks together. I am going to expermiment a bit by reamping the drums into the sebatron and putting mixing it in with the original recorded tracks.

I already put time in working with plugins, compression, eq, and a little reverb on the snare. I am having some issues with phasing, i need to see what kind of plugins I could use to help this situation. It isn't a problem when using the original tracks, it only becomes a problem when I'm duplicating tracks.

I had to mess around with phase shifting plugins and eq's to help the phasing issues. Also, I reamped the drums out of the presonus firebox into the Sebatron and back in. Sounds really nice. Full warm sound and tamed/smoothed out the cymbals.

Guitar:I used the Alembic Skylark for this song.
I ran it through my pedalboard, using the Barber Tone Press and the Timmy pedal with only a tiny bit of gain added for a little dirt.

I then ran the signal into the Sebatron, daisy chained from it's ch. 1 to ch. 2, and finally into the Presonus Firebox.

I also recorded another guitar track with the Rickenbacker 360. I used a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 and Kaden Effects Flutter Tone Tremelo. I ran the pedals through the A Designs Reddi Tube DI into firecbox.

I cloned and used some amplitude plugins on these guitar tracks and mixed it with the original recorded tracks.

I also reamped out of the Presonus Firebox through a Radial JDI into a Fender Blues Jr. amp.

I mic'd the amp with an Audix i5 powered by the Sebatron daisy chained from ch. 1 to 2, back into firebox.

And I also mic'd the amp with a Studio Projects B1 powered by a Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into the Safesound P1's line in bypassing the preamp and using it's expander, limiter and compressor.

Also, I recorded the Gustavo Arias classical parlour guitar on the chorus parts. I recorded it with a Studio Projects B1 through Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound's line in (compressor, expander, and limiter).

I took the reamped stem of the guitar and reamped it into musicman, adjusted eq on the musicman and used 2 mics.
First, an Audix i5 powered by Sebatron vmp200e ch.1 daisy chained to ch.2 then back into firebox.

And a Studio Projects B1 into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 to Safesound P1 for expander, limiter, compression. Then back into Firebox.

Bass:
1975 4001 Rickenbacker bass into Phoenix Audio DRS-1, into Presonus Firebox.

EV Vocals:
I recorded with a CAD M179 into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound P1 (expander, compressor, limiter). I used some plugins for more compression, a little reverb, and delay.

Tom's Vocal:
I used a Studio Projects B1 into Phoenix Audio DRS-1 into Safesound P1 line in (compressor, limiter, expander), into Presonus Firebox. I used some plugins for compression and reverb.
